When I read the first book in this series, I was hooked. MURDER AT THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY (Book 27 in the series) The explosion at the gunpowder factory is resolved, but in the end, we are left with a conundrum that can only be solved in a future book (or books). How do these disparate crimes and characters fit together? All becomes clear when the Baker Street regulars find a solution. Jack's case involves a sergeant with whom he trained. (Note to self: re-read "A Study in Scarlet.")Īs Sherlock and Lucy combine their reason and intelligence to find the answer to a problem already investigated, and on which a report has been issued by Her Majesty’s Inspector of Explosives, Jack Kelly becomes embroiled in an investigation of the murder of a fellow police officer. It is in Conan Doyle's first story of Holmes and Watson, "A Study in Scarlet," that Inspector Gregson appears. It is the television show "Elementary" with which I identify Gregson as an associate of Sherlock Holmes. Now he's a constable walking a beat in Whitechapel. Inspector Tobias Gregson was the Scotland Yard detective originally investigating the scene. This seems a rather impossible task even for the mighty powers of deduction for which Holmes is renowned. Months pass after the explosion before the owner of Rexford Gunpowder Factory, one Bradley Rexford, presents himself to Sherlock Holmes requesting that he investigate the cause of the disaster. The thought of a gunpowder factory anywhere near a metropolitan area like London should send shivers down anyone's spine… especially after a building in one such factory seems to have spontaneously blown itself up. Just how do a missing relative, a stolen painting, and abduction mesh to become a coherent whole? It takes the mind of Holmes, with a bit of help from the Baker Street regulars to answer that question. THE MISSING MARINER is one of the shorter adventures, yet it is packed with all the things a Sherlock Holmes mystery should contain. His friendship with Becky Kelly, sister-in-law to Lucy James Kelly insures his continued appearance in the series. Much of THE MISSING MARINER is told by Flynn who finds himself in most uncomfortable circumstances. His intelligence and street savvy make him an interesting addition to the sleuthing team. The three stories contained herein form a complete, novel-length narrative of the exploits of Holmes and Watson along with the cast of characters introduced by the writing duo of Anna Elliott and Charles Veley.įlynn is fast becoming one my favorite characters in the continuing saga of Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James.
